Leeds West Indian Carnival is Europe’s longest-running authentic Caribbean carnival parade. Started in 1967 as an antidote to the yearning for the Caribbean culture and heritage of a group of West Indian students in Leeds – today is a place for joy, feathers, steel pan drums, sound systems and political activism. This piece is a ’16-’17 record of that tradition of song, dance and costume taking over the streets of the Caribbean Chapeltown suburb.
